Smartphones Without Internet Can Be Hacked Too!!

Smartphones Without Internet Can Be Hacked Too!!

Hackers may be able to sneak into your laptop or smartphone just by analyzing the low-power electronic signals your device emits even when it is not connected to the internet, researchers say.

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are now investigating where these information 'leaks' originate so they can help hardware and software designers develop strategies to plug them.

By studying emissions from multiple computers, the researchers have developed a metric for measuring the strength of the leaks — known technically as 'side-channel signal' — to help prioritize security efforts.

"People are focused on security for the internet and on the wireless communication side, but we are concerned with what can be learned from your computer without it intentionally sending anything," said Alenka Zajic, an assistant professor in Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

"Even if you have the internet connection disabled, you are still emanating information that somebody could use to attack your computer or smartphone," said Zajic.

Side-channel emissions can be measured several feet away from an operating computer using a variety of spying methods. Electromagnetic emissions can be received using antennas hidden in a briefcase, for instance.

Acoustic emissions — sounds produced by electronic components such as capacitors — can be picked up by microphones hidden beneath tables, researchers said.

Information on power fluctuations, which can help hackers determine what the computer is doing, can be measured by fake battery chargers plugged into power outlets adjacent to a laptop's power converter.

Some signals can be picked up by a simple AM/FM radio, while others require more sophisticated spectrum analyzers.

And computer components such as voltage regulators produce emissions that can carry signals produced elsewhere in the laptop.

As a demonstration, Zajic typed a simulated password on one laptop that was not connected to the internet.

On the other side of a wall, a colleague using another disconnected laptop read the password as it was being typed by intercepting side-channel signals produced by the first laptop's keyboard software, which had been modified to make the characters easier to identify.

"There is nothing added in the code to raise suspicion," said Milos Prvulovic, an associate professor in the Georgia Tech School of Computer Science.

"It looks like a correct, but not terribly efficient version of normal keyboard driver software. And in several applications, such as normal spell-checking, grammar-checking and display-updating, the existing software is sufficient for a successful attack," said Prvulovic.

Currently, there is no mention in the open literature of hackers using side-channel attacks, but the researchers believe it is only a matter of time before that happens.

Redmi2 - Xiaomi launches a 4G enabled phone!!

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has launched a low-cost TD-LTE smartphone Redmi 2, the successor of Redmi 1S. The smartphone will go on sale on January 15 in China and cost 699 yuan (approximately $110).

While Redmi 2 shares a few features with its predecessor, it has a few upgrades apart from the 4G-capability. The new model is powered by the 64-bit 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, while Redmi 1S comes with the 1.6GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset.

The front camera gets a resolution bump, from 1.6MP in Redmi 1S to 2MP in Redmi 2. The battery is also slightly beefier at 2,200mAh in the new smartphone, up from 2,000mAh of Redmi 1S. Xiaomi's Redmi 2 smartphone also supports QuickCharge 1.0 technology for faster battery charging.

Xiaomi will be preloading the Android 4.4-based MIUI 6.0 software with Redmi 2, while the Redmi 1S runs on the Android 4.3-based MIUI 5.0 custom skin. The new model is thinner (9.2mm) and lighter (134gram) than its predecessor (9.9mm and 158gram).

The remaining features of Redmi 2 are same as that of its older sibling, including the 5-inch HD screen with DragonTrail glass, 8GB internal storage, 32GB microSD card, 1GB RAM and connectivity options.

MOTOROLA 'LEAKS' MOTO G WITH 4G,BIGGER BATTERY!!

Motorola 'leaks' Moto G with 4G, bigger battery

Motorola briefly listed a new variant of the second-generation Moto G smartphone, which features a bigger battery and 4G capability, in Brazil. However, the details of the model have been removed from the website now; there was no word on the pricing of the model at the time it was listed.

On the Moto G listing page, the Motorola Brazil website earlier mentioned the 4G LTE capabilities under the headers of storage capacity, dimensions, screen, networks and bands. The website listed that the battery capacity of the 4G model will be 2,390mAh, compared to the 2,070mAh battery of the current model. Below is the screenshot of the listing, courtesy technology website Droid Life:

Moto G with a bigger battery and 4G would cater to markets where high-speed mobile internet access is available at the moment. Though 4G is not widely available in India at present, telecom operators like Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm are working towards rolling out the mobile network in major cities.

Smartphone manufacturers are also eyeing the 4G rollout in India as the next big thing for the market, with players like Huawei and Lenovo already announcing plans to unveil budget 4G models. Xiaomi has already launched its sub-Rs 10,000 Redmi Note 4G smartphone in the country. Therefore, a Moto G variant with 4G capability will not come as much of a surprise, considering the popularity of the smartphone and the imminent rise of 4G networks in India.

The second-generation Moto G is among the best smartphones under Rs 15,000 in the market right now. It has a 5-inch HD display, Android 4.4 operating system, 8GB internal storage, microSD card support up to 32GB, 1GB RAM, 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front camera. Connectivity options in the model available in India include 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0.

WINDOWS 10!!!!!WHATS NEW?

Windows 10 is out for developers and will be    available with all newer PCs within next 2 months. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore repeatedly emphasized that this is a very early build without even all the features that have been announced, and that there might be rough spots. We didn't see any problems in the time we had to try it out at Microsoft's San Francisco event, but what's clear is that there is plenty more to come.

Microsoft gave the first look at its Windows 10 operating system on Tuesday, a major release that will span all hardware from PCs to phones and try to address the ills that have dogged Windows 8. The event in San Francisco was aimed mostly at enterprise customers, and Microsoft promised an OS that will be more intuitive for the millions of workers still on Windows 7 and older OSes. Here’s a rundown of some of the key points we learned Tuesday about Windows 10.

About the new 'START'

As expected, the Start menu is the default if you use Windows 10 with a keyboard and mouse, though you can keep the full-screen Start screen if you prefer it. Even on the Start menu, you can pin Live Tiles in multiple sizes on the right, but on the left you also get the familiar list of pinned and recent applications, complete with jump lists for files, the search box that you can also use to run commands and a power button for shutting down or restarting your PC.

The search box has all the Windows 8 features, including results from Bing and the Windows store, and a separate Search menu next to the Start button gives you trending topics directly from Bing, too.

ALT + TAB is outsmarted by Task View button

Using Alt Tab to move between open windows is a keyboard shortcut that's been around since 1990 and it still gives you a line of windows to choose from. As with Windows 8.1, those now include any modern apps you have running, and those now open as windows on the desktop like any other software you're running, ready to be resized or snapped side by side. The new Task View button on the taskbar is there to introduce the idea of moving between windows to the vast majority of Windows users who've never tried Alt Tab.

Snapping does more than the 'two desktop apps getting half the desktop' layout that you get in Windows 8. If you have one narrow window, the second window can take up all the rest of the space, or you can snap four apps, one in each corner. Windows will even show thumbnails of open windows to help you pick the one you want to snap without rearranging everything.

Devices running Win10

Windows 10 will run across an incredibly broad set of devices – from the Internet of Things, to servers in enterprise datacenters worldwide. Some of these devices have 4 inch screens – some have 80 inch screens – and some don’t have screens at all. Some of these devices you hold in your hand, others are ten feet away. Some of these devices you primarily use touch/pen, others mouse/keyboard, others controller/gesture – and some devices can switch between input types.

Actual release

The OS will launch around the middle of next year, after Microsoft’s Build conference. Before that, a select group of “Windows insiders” will receive a “technical preview build” for laptops and desktops on Wednesday this week, followed “soon after” by a preview for servers. Previews of other device categories will follow later.

Charms

Despite rumours, the Charms bar that you get when you swipe the edge of a touchscreen hasn't gone away in Windows 10, but you might not see it when you use the Windows-C keyboard shortcut. If you have a mouse and keyboard and the window that's active is a modern app like the Windows Store, that keyboard shortcut brings up a mini Charms menu hanging off the top left corner of the app instead.

This has the three dots that give you any extra commands, now clearly labelled as App Commands, the Search, Share and Settings charms that are usually on the Charms bar, plus other useful commands like Play, Print and Project, plus the option of running the app Full Screen. If you can't print from the app, the Print charm is on the menu but greyed out.

That makes the Charms less touch friendly but much more mouse friendly when you're controlling an app; which is what you want when you're using a mouse - all the way over to the side of the screen and all the way back isn't efficient with a mouse. When you're controlling Windows - which is what you get when you don't have a modern app selected - having the Charms and settings bar at the side of the screen is fairly logical. And those Charms are staying around (although probably in a different arrangement with a more logical division of what shows up where) because when the Windows team took them out, users at Microsoft complained loudly. That big friendly sidebar for choosing and changing Wi-Fi turns out to be really handy.

Finally

Windows 10 is all about balancing the demands of different users. It's not just business users with desktop PCs and keyboards, versus tablet users. Windows is for sensors and data centres and Windows Phone and Xbox One as well as tablets and laptops and desktop PCs and giant wall screens and all the devices in between (at least in Microsoft's ambitions).

But what we're seeing in this first technical preview release is very much about balancing the heritage of two decades on Windows with the new world of touch, and with making IT teams comfortable with the BYOD and consumerisation features introduced in Windows 8 by giving them more security options and more management.

At the Climax of XP

Win xp was one of my favorite OS and of course will be. Let's see if win10 can fill the blank space created by XP. However win7 had a nice run throughout its life but it's not true about win8/8.1.
Many users are still trying to sort out their problems with win8.1. Let's hope Microsoft presents customers with a better OS.

Anyways thank you for reading my post. If you like the post please share it . I would love to hear for you. Comments section is always open!!!

APPLE SUED FOR 'FALSE' ADVERTISING

Feel frustrated every time Apple releases an iOS update and asks you to empty storage space on your iPhone or move data to iCloud? You're not the only one.

In fact, a lawsuit has been filed against Apple in a US court (Bay Area federal court), alleging that the Cupertino giant doesn't inform users about the space required by updates, prompting them to move data to iCloud, Apple's freemium cloud storage service.

According to a report by SiliconBeat, the plaintiffs claim that iOS 8 can take up as much as 23.1% of the advertised storage capacity on Apple devices. Apple doesn't disclose the actual storage space the OS takes and peddles the iCloud service to users who have no other option for saving their pictures and videos. The plaintiffs seek damages and changes to Apple policies under California state law.

The complaint also mentions that the actual storage capacity offered by Apple iOS devices is not close to the capacity advertised by the tech giant.

As per a Forbes report, the complaint claims, "the discrepancy between advertised and available capacity is substantial and beyond any possible reasonable expectation. For the Devices, the shortfall ranges from 18.1-23.1%."

The complaint alleges that Apple reduces the size of the storage allocated to users for storing media while the size used for system resources (inaccessible to users) stays unused.

As per the plaintiffs, Apple "knows, but conceals and fails to disclose in its advertising, marketing or promotional materials," the discrepancy related to storage space.

They also allege that Apple offers less storage than advertised, so that it "could sell that capacity on iCloud in a desperate moment."

The complaint also mentions iOS 8 being bloated and using a large part of storage space.

Apple has not commented on the matter, yet.
